Paying our respects

Montgomery has some really beautiful final resting places.  In search of one, we found more than we could have imagined. Armed with our faithful GPS (it's on it's last "legs") we head to a Hank Williams, Sr. Memorial. Here's what we found!

OK, not the cemetery, but we're getting closer.  Didn't know about the number of mourners at his funeral!  Sir Garmin of GPS says Greenwood Cemetery, so off we go!

We wander though this beautiful old cemetery not knowing where we're going, but Sir Garmin says he does.

Turns out Former Governors George and Lurleen Wallace are buried here along with another family member.  We do stop to pay our respects. The tall brick structure belongs to another family.

We've been to where Hank Sr is buried, but it's been a long time.  Wandering among the tombstones and markers is fun so we keep going.

We spot a big marker and head toward it.  Turns out to be Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

These four markers are one large monument sitting on a cross formed from marble strips or blocks.

We keep looking, but no Williams monument.  We drive out toward where Sir Garmin says it is, but no luck.  We finally ran into two cemetery salespersons and asked them.  Turns out were in the wrong cemetery.  Hank and Audrey are buried in the Oakwood Annex.  Fortunately, it's close by.

Oakwood Cemetery is beautiful.  Old, old monuments and headstones.  You drive through a small gate near the police station to reach it.  We found out later there was an easier and closer entrance, but this one is great.

It's not hard to miss this monument.  Fans stole the grass from the graves, so astro-turf was put down there.  Not trying to be funny, but someone suggested the whole thing looked like a Putt-Putt course.  Kind of had to agree.  You can decide for yourself!

Top Detail on Hank's Monument

There are two of these guitars.  One is for Audry and one is for Hank.  Both appear to be made of ribbon and Styrofoam.

All of Hank's hits are inscribed on his monument.

A note to Hank from Audrey on the back of his tombstone.

A note to Audrey from Hank Jr. and his sister Lycretia.

David and Chrissy spend a few minutes together at the gravesides.

What a monument!  WOW!  We wandered just to the left of this and were really surprised to see who was buried there.

The markers above are those of British RAF pilots who died in training at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama during WWII.  The French officers who also died are buried nearby.  Instead of the English Channel separating them, this cross monument below does.

The names of all the dead French and English are listed here.

Another rainy day so we draw to a close here.
Catch us down the road!

Jenny :)
